Weekend Recap June 29th-30th

July 3rd, 2019

Author: John Magers

It was a hot but good weekend for the Orange! Many teams found themselves in championship games on Sunday with one of the matchups being all Orange.

10u Six brought home some hardware this past weekend winning The Great American Bash in Cicero. The boys ended up playing 4 games over 9 hours in 90+ degree weather on Sunday to secure their first tournament win as a team. Kaden Gentry pitched a complete game in the semi-final striking out 10 and only allowing 1 earned run. He also had a triple and an inside the park home run on the day! Drew Leeson continued to be a solid leadoff hitter collecting 3 hits, 2 walks, and 4 runs scored. Mel Gideon had 3 hits on the day, including a triple, and logged 11 innings behind the plate over the 4 games. Caleb Johnson contributed 3 hits as well, including a double, triple, and 3 RBIs.

It was an all-Orange championship game with 10u Six playing the #1 seed 10u Proll. In a back and forth affair, 10U Six came out on top 10-8. Jack Combs pitched 5 innings allowing only 2 earned runs and striking out 6. Jack also had a tremendous day at the plate going 5-8 with 3 runs scored. Will Countryman had a big bat in the championship game going 2-3 with 2 RBIs and a run scored. Julian Six recorded the last three outs to earn the save.

9u Sarver competed in the Sandlot Classic at Billericay Park in Fishers. The weekend ended with a bang for the Orange as the boys captured the Silver Bracket championship on Sunday!

The weekend was filled with offensive power starting on Thursday vs Express Black with a big game 1 win to start pool play. Saturday's pool play saw a couple losses as pitching struggled vs Oakland Bombers and Express Red.

The Orange bounced back on Sunday by exploding on the offensive side and taking three convincing wins in a row vs Lafayette Squires, Indiana Braves, and Carmel Pups to win the bracket. It was a long, hot weekend but 9u Sarver managed to keep energy at an all time high throughout the heat. They went a combined 81-156 (.519) over six games. The Orange also managed to score 99 runs over that span, which is an average of 17 runs a game! They finished 4-2 on the weekend with a ring and some serious tan lines to show off their hard work!

12u Phillips won the silver bracket championship game in the NYB Wood Bat Classic tournament. The bats came alive in the tournament for the Orange, as they collected 30 hits in 4 games. Leading the way was Ethan Utzig, going 7 for 10 (.700) at the plate, knocking in 4 RBI's while scoring 2 runs. Also hot at the plate was JT Duke, going 5-9 (.556) with 5 RBI's and 4 runs scored. Anthony Benetti also got in on the hitting action, going 4-10 (.400) and scoring 6 runs from the leadoff spot. Pitching was spectacular on the weekend, led by Hayden Schwinn's 5.1 innings. Hayden struck out 2 while posting only a 2.25 ERA for the tournament. Doland Cromer led all pitchers with 6 K's over 4.2 innings pitched, also posting a fantastic 2.57 ERA. Grant Fellows got the biggest save of the season, coming in at the top of the 6th with 2 outs, holding a 2 run lead with the tying run at the plate. Grant forced weak contact to pick up the save and secure the win in the championship game. Grant also led all pitchers with only a 1.38 ERA over 4.1 total innings pitched. As good as the pitching and hitting were, defense was the key to the performance for 12u Phillips this weekend. The team had a fielding percentage of 90% or higher for all 3 pool play games, coming in at .886% for the entire tournament. Next up for 12u Phillips is the NYB World Series.

13u Coryell was in their State Tournament this past weekend in Columbus, Indiana. The Orange finished in 9th, and the only two losses they had came against the two teams in the Championship. Coach Coryell said this past tournament spoke volumes as the team has really bonded and come together to put a strong outing down in Columbus, IN last weekend.

Our Team Prayer

"Dear Heavenly Father, we are so blessed to have the opportunity to play this wonderful game called baseball. We ask your blessings upon us today and that as we play and compete at our highest abilities we pray that you help each of us act in a way that is pleasing to You and that is also respectful and honorable to our opponents, to our coaches, to our parents and to the umpires. In Jesus Name we pray, amen."
